The Colosseum. It stands proud as one of Rome’s greatest monuments and is a must see when visiting the Eternal City.
But, instead of waiting in, what can sometimes seem like, endless queues, why not venture a few yards to the Arch of Constantine? Or, slightly further along and a picturesque 15 minute walk to the Forum is worth the exertion whilst you wait for the queues to go down.
If you find yourself wandering around the ruins, keep an eye out for the statues – look closely enough and you’ll see some of them move!
In fact walking around the city is one of the best ways to unlock its many treasures. The Metro is convenient but, if you fancy the exercise, you’ll find everything is in walking distance. The Trevi Fountain is only a 20 minute stroll from the Colosseum, whilst the Pantheon is just a short walk further.
It is along these side streets that you will find the authentic Roman trattorias and their thin based pizzas are a must have. But a real treat is to get something to eat at one of the restaurants that offer views of the Colosseum, if you’re prepared to pay for the luxury then it is a great way to spend a romantic evening.
