15th August 2012
The Brownlee Brothers of Horsforth, West Yorkshire, just a stones throw away from our base at Leeds Bradford Airport returned home victorious this Monday as Gold and Bronze medallists in the Triathlon. The sport is undoubtedly one of the most gruelling challenges an athlete can face consisting of a 1500m swim, 43km bike ride and 10km run.
The pair were both highlighted as triathlon medal hopefuls way back in the November/December 2011 edition of our in-flight JetAway magazine. Jonathan Brownlee the younger of the two brothers described the prospect of winning two medals as, “Absolutely incredible stuff. The chances are small because so much can happen in a Triathlon, but the unpredictability is what makes it exciting. We’ll have to wait and see – and hope.”
As ever, the brothers and training partners worked tirelessly together to ensure they had a chance of medal winning positions at London 2012 on Tuesday 7th August, Hyde Park. Unfortunately Jonathan incurred a 15 second penalty for mounting his bike too early during the first changeover. Consequently, Alastair set an extremely fast pace going into the final run to get his brother as far way from the chasing pack as possible. The speed in which Alastair ran the 10k was just one minute 23 seconds slower than the time Mo Farah clocked in winning the 10,000m title. This time was too much for anyone else to handle and Alastair took home the Gold with Jonathan finishing in Bronze place despite his penalty. The Brownlees’ medals were the first won by British siblings since the Paris Games of 1900, a truly amazing feat.
This was just two of twelve medals to come from the Yorkshire region, taking home the same number of Gold’s as Australia and Japan. Here is a full list of Yorkshire’s winning athletes:
