With warm, blue waters and sparse, sandy beaches, the Greek islands of Crete and Corfu are perfect for an autumn family break, with the October half-term being highly popular with families. Even though cheap flights to Crete are plentiful this time of year, families would generally still expect to pay a bit more for their accommodation during that one-week period, but this year there has been a drop in hotel prices across Europe, with the trend set to continue up to and including the half-term holiday.
Great Savings to be Made
According to the tHPI (the trivago Hotel Price Index), hotel prices rose during September, but this has been offset by a decrease in October, both in the UK and across Europe. In September, the average European short break would have cost £105, which has fallen to £99 this month. This represents an average drop of around 6%. Only a few city destinations increased their rates.
While many European cities have dropped their rates to entice half-term visitors, they can be chilly. However, Barcelona is not the only option for getting a tan, as the beach resorts of Cyprus and Portugal have also reduced their prices by around 11%. However, they are left in the shade by Greece. By booking cheap flights to Rhodes or Corfu, sun-seekers can save around 16% on last month’s prices.
