For those seeking a holiday that offers peace, quiet and natural beauty in abundance, Latchi and Polis in Cyprus await. In under an hour from Paphos airport, you can be amidst the unspoilt tranquillity of some of the island’s most serene and awe-inspiring landscapes.
It’s little wonder that the area surrounding Latchi and Polis is said to be the mythical birthplace of the goddess of love, Aphrodite. Tucked away on the Akamas Peninsula, an area of such outstanding beauty it is UNESCO - protected, you can wander through Aphrodite’s playground, guided by little more than a warm breeze.
Indeed, you may even want to follow the Aphrodite trail, which starts at the Baths of Aphrodite, whose waters were said to have guaranteed eternal youth and beauty – perhaps the secret Aphrodite’s irresistible attraction!
In the nearby fishing village of Latchi, life goes on at a relaxed pace. The harbour bobs with brightly painted fishing boats which serve the local restaurants with that day’s catch. If you want to feel the sand between your toes, then Latchi has its own European Blue Flag beach, where you can also enjoy a range of watersports. Or why not take a boat trip along the Akamas Peninsula, where you can snorkel in a clear blue cove and enjoy a beach barbecue lunch in a perfect setting?
Whilst Polis is more of a bustling market town, it still oozes traditional Cypriot charm. White-washed houses and domed churches are set against a lush backdrop of meadows, forests and rugged mountains to create a picture postcard scene. Overlooking Chrysochou Bay, Polis really does offer golden sands lapped by crystal clear waters. For nature-lovers, nearby Lara Bay is home to green and loggerhead turtles, monk seals and the occasional dolphin frolicking though the waves.
If you’re willing to push the boat out, stay at the luxury 5* Hotel Anassa – it’s well-known for its outstanding service, beautiful location and private bay. It’s been rumoured that the Beckhams and Leonardo DiCaprio have stayed there as well!
All in all, a natural destination for those who want peace and quiet as well as sea, sand and sun.
