The Algarve is located on Portugal’s southernmost coastline, attracting countless tourists every year due to its warm sea and picturesque landscape. Despite its popularity, much of the region boasts many hidden beaches and small fishing villages where you can escape the tourist crowds.
However, relaxing on the beach is not the only outdoor activity that is popular. The Algarve has 30 golf courses that are among the best in Europe, attracting amateurs and professionals alike.
From Sailing to Castles
The warm waters provide the perfect conditions for sailing. You can stop off in one of the famous marinas, which have fantastic restaurants and shopping facilities. The region is famous for its wildlife; Desert Island is a tranquil haven with crystal waters, ideal for bird watching, and the Costa Vincentina Natural Park offers a world of wildlife to explore.
The region is rich in history and culture, with castles, roman roads and traditional houses to delve into. A visit to the Cerro da Vila Archaeological centre and museum is a perfect way to discover roman ruins dating from the 3rd Century. An exciting annual event takes place in Castro Marim at the end of August, when the castle returns to the Middle Ages in an historical recreation. The festival includes jousting tournaments, banquets and street theatre performances - a great way for the whole family to have fun.
As well as an enticing range of activities for people of all ages and interests, the abundance of cheap flights to the Algarve region make it an ideal place to go on holiday.
