Five Great Days Out in Tenerife

29th August 2012

There’s no doubt that Tenerife is a perennial holiday favourite. Great beaches, year-round sunshine, the warm sea, vibrant resorts, they all add up to make it a great choice for all ages.

For a break from lounging by the pool or sea, enjoy one of our suggested days out on the island!

Las Aguilas Jungle Park

Set in the hills above Los Cristianos, Las Aguilas Jungle Park is the Canaries’ best zoological and botanical attraction bar none.

Within its 75,000 sq.m. of jungle surroundings you’ll find over 500 animals – including one of only 27 white lions in the world – as well as walkways, lagoons, waterfalls and caves. Other animals include Siberian tigers, crocodiles and hippopotami living in habitats which are very similar to the ones they enjoy in the wild. Special attractions include birds of prey shows featuring eagles, vultures and owls which swoop down to grab food from the hands of their keepers.

There are also lots of great interactive elements including the chance to feed monkeys nuts and to enter the bird enclosure with a jar of nectar. Within moments you’re the main attraction for flocks of tiny humming birds!

Mount Teide

At 3,718 metres Mount Teide is the highest peak in Spain. Still an active volcano (though don’t worry – the last eruption was in 1909!) Mount Teide attracts thousands of visitors a year with many tours available setting off from all of Tenerife’s major resorts.

To reach the mountain you travel through the breathtaking Teide National Park which has been an official UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007. The park starts at around 2000 metres above sea level so is often snowcovered during the winter months, but the temperature there can rise as high as 40C in high summer.

Coach tours generally take you to the base of the cable car ride which then carries you almost to the summit. From here the views can be stunning with Gran Canaria and Las Palmas easily visible in the distance.

Siam Park

They call it the most spectacular water park in Europe, and just one visit will tell you why. Opened in 2008, it boasts a whole range of water rides including the adrenaline-pumping 28 m Tower of Power, the Dragon and the Mekong Rapids – and it even has its own surf school if you fancy learning how to catch a wave or two. As its name suggests, the park has a Thai theme and is set in lush, green surroundings. If you’ve had enough thrills for the day you can pick up a souvenir or two at the traditional floating Thai market.

Reaching Siam Park is easy too. There’s a free bus service every half hour from the local resorts of Adeje, Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos.

Submarine Safari

Here’s one holiday experience you’ll definitely remember! Take an hour-long journey under the sea aboard the $3.5 million Sub Fun Tres submarine. The submarine has pick-up points at all the major resorts along the southern coast and once on board you’ll be taken out to sea where the mysteries of the ocean will be revealed.

Looking out from your large viewing port you will be able to marvel at the hidden world of undersea life while receiving an expert commentary from the English-speaking guide. TV monitors give you all-round vision so you can be sure that you won’t miss a thing, and they also carry speed and depth data about the submarine.

Medieval Night

Last, but by no means least, in a rundown of Tenerife must-sees is the Medieval Night at the atmospheric Castillo San Miguel.

On arrival you are greeted by the Count, Don Roderigo and his daughter, the young countess. What follows is a thrilling evening of entertainment including sword fights, jousting and incredible horsemanship.

At the heart of the evening is the sumptuous Medieval banquet which you eat in the traditional Henry the Eighth style – think whole chickens but no knife and fork – and enjoy the free-flowing wine brought to you by serving maids as you soak up the evening’s unique atmosphere.

So there you have it. Five very different experiences to enjoy in Tenerife. Give one or two a go or set yourself the challenge of fitting all five into a break. And, whatever you decide to do, one thing’ s for certain. You’ll be taking some unforgettable memories home with you!
