It’s known as the island of year round sunshine but hundreds of athletes will be wishing for cooler temperatures on May 19th when Lanzarote’s annual Ironman challenge takes place.
Ironman Lanzarote is one of the toughest courses in the world with searing heat, high winds, rugged terrain and a challenging bike course that winds its way up and down two mountains.
The Ironman Course
The competition gets underway with a 2.5 mile swim at Playa Grande, Puerto del Carmen, one of the main tourist resorts on the island. After a cooling dip in the sea, the 110 mile bike course is where things really start to get tough for hundreds of athletes.
The bike circuit takes athletes all around the island with a climb of more than 2600 meters in strong mountain winds. Spectators can enjoy amazing views as competitors race against each other.
The final leg of the Ironman course is a grueling marathon along the seafront at Puerto del Carmen. If you’re planning to visit Lanzarote during the middle of May then you’ll be able to watch this amazing event and show your support to the hundreds of athletes taking part.
