Dancers are strapping on their Cuban heels and booking cheap flights to the Spanish Costas for the 24th European Dance Championship, which is once more taking place at Torremolinos.
During the summer months, people flock to Torremolinos, on the Costa del Sol, for the sunshine and beaches, but off-season it becomes the dance capital of Europe. Recently, the town hosted the 24th European Dance Championship, which began on Monday, February 25, at the Palacio San Miguel and continued until March 2. More than 3,000 competitors, from all parts of Europe including the UK, usually take part, with many arriving via Malaga airport.
A Busy Cultural Calendar
Ranging in age from tiny tots to pensioners, they spend the week entertaining the audience and judges with their flamboyant takes on the tango, waltz, cha-cha, quick step and more. What’s more, qualifying heats were free to watch, with evening gala performances just a miserly €5.
The championship is one of the top events in Torremolinos’ busy cultural calendar, coming between the Carnaval in early February, and the Holy Week festivities in mid-March. It kicked off in fine fettle, with a Grand Parade of all the participants, dressed in their competition finery. A riot of feathers, sequins and sparkle, some of the outfits were very revealing indeed, but with temperatures hovering around 17°C, the wearers had no need to worry about catching a cold.
Torremolinos and Malaga have a year-round calendar of fetes, festivals, and cultural events, with one of the highlights being the Feria de Malaga in August. Cheap flights to the Spanish Costas are available through Jet2.com.
