The beautiful little resort of Javea is a favourite with holidaymakers booking cheap flights to the Spanish Costas with Jet2.com, and soon it will be honoured by world tennis ace David Ferrer, who was born in the town and will be there to open a smart new promenade named after him.
The chic Arenal beachfront esplanade was recently completed on a day of brilliant sunshine. Dotted with palm trees and washed by crystal blue waters, the clean silvery sands are ideal for paddling, sand-castle building or simply relaxing and forgetting life’s troubles.
Just over an hour’s drive from Alicante airport, this relaxing low-key resort is mercifully free of high-rise blocks, allowing an uninterrupted view of the mountains behind. As well as an attractive modern marina, there is a harbour dating back to the 1400s, plus numerous other historic sites – including the remains of a Roman fish sauce factory, the Punta de l'Arenal, hidden behind a hotel.
Javea was originally a walled town, fortified to protect it from marauding pirates, and beyond the restaurants, bars and shops of the new esplanade there is an interesting Old Town with an archaeological museum, art gallery and 14th century church. Outside the church are two cannon – all that is left of a fortress which once stood at one end of Arenal beach. The museum has many ancient relics gathered from the caverns of Montgó Natural Park, with evidence of human occupation dating back 30,000 years.
