The 2011 Travel
Trade “Copa De Espana” 5-aside Competition was held at Liverpool FC’s famous
Melwood Training Ground last weekend. Jet2.com and Jet2holidays both entered
teams which included 17 members of staff from the Leeds Bradford Office.
Organised by
the Spanish Tourist Board, a total of 16 teams participated in the tournament including
Telegraph Travel, Thomas Cook and British Airways to name but a few.
Both teams dominated
their opening games, with Jet2holidays thrashing trade rivals
Thomas Cook 4-0 to finish second in their group. Jet2.com also finished
second in their group after scoring a hatful of goals, narrowly avoiding Jet2holidays
in the next round.
Despite a
tireless performance from Jet2holidays in the rising heat,
they were knocked out in the quarter finals to Cosmos 5-3. Jet2.com won their
quarter and semi final games beating last year’s winners Telegraph Travel and
Low Cost Travel along the way.
In the final Jet2.com met Jet2holidays’ conquerors’;
Cosmos. With the scores level at half time, a number of injuries played their part and Jet2.com eventually lost 5-1. Player
Manager Trevor Caplis (Charter Sales) reflected on his team’s efforts “We are disappointed we didn’t win, but
there’s always next year. It’s the first time we have taken part so we’re proud
of our achievements but we want to go back next year and win the tournament.”
Neither team left empty handed however, Joe
McCarroll (Web Designer) from Jet2holidays won 3rd Best
Player of the Tournament, and Andrew Papworth (First Officer) from Jet2.com
won 2nd best player of the Tournament and Top Goal Scorer
with an impressive 14 goals.
