- Staff at leading leisure airline join forces with Blackpool Airport for charity plane pull
10th September 2013 – It’s a strength challenge with a difference, as a group of 20 Jet2.com aircraft engineers and crew join forces with Blackpool Airport in an attempt to pull one of the airlines' 35 tonne Boeing 737-300 aircraft 30 metres.
The airline’s first ever plane pull is set to raise vital funds for SPACE, a Preston charity which currently operates the largest multi-sensory environment in the UK for people with special needs. Nearly 48,000 people benefit from its versatile sensory room every year, including the sister of Jet2.com captain, Chris Lindsey, who inspired this daring challenge.
All money raised is going towards the £250,000 target to equip the amazing sensory room in the new centre, allowing the charity to double the number of people who are able to benefit from the new facilities.
Ashley Cowan, Operations Director at Jet2.com said: “These guys are certainly going to make company history as it’s the first time anyone has pulled one of our planes. It’s a great idea for a worthy cause and everyone is very excited, if not a little nervous, about this challenge. Blackpool is an important base for us and it’s fantastic that our team at the airport is so keen to support the local community – we wish them the very best of luck!”
Hilary Holden, Fundraising Co-ordinator at SPACE, added: “SPACE not only provides vital support to families, children, adults and carers in the North West, we also have many people visiting from across the UK each year. The demand for our sessions is huge which is why the development of a new centre is so important.
“I can’t thank Jet2.com enough for the effort and enthusiasm which has gone into this charity plane pull. It is certainly the most ambitious and exciting fundraising initiative I’ve been involved in and it’s fantastic that such a key business in the region is helping us fulfil our vision of providing an even better sensory experience for even more people.”
