Pupils from Froebelian school in Leeds beat local rivals at the Leeds schools’ High 5 netball finals for the chance to represent the city at the Jet2holidays West Yorkshire School Games.

Hundreds of players from schools across Leeds competed, with the top five schools qualifying for the district finals which will be held at Leeds Metropolitan University. Froebelian beat teams from Calverley CE, Churwell, St Aidan’s and St Matthew’s and will now take on teams from the rest of the county at the Jet2holidays West Yorkshire School Games, part of the national Sainsbury’s School Games.

The teams were congratulated by Yorkshire Jet’s Superleague players Lucy Richardson and Francine Marshall, and England Netball Development Officer, Rebecca Williams.

The county finals will take place on Tuesday 8th July at Leeds Metropolitan University in Headingley where 1,200 young people from across West Yorkshire will compete in 11 sports in the hope of being crowned county champions.

Run by West Yorkshire Sport, the West Yorkshire School Games 2014 is being sponsored by Leeds-based tour operator, Jet2holidays for the second year in a row. The games are part of the Sainsbury’s School Games, an Olympic legacy programme that aims to bring thousands of young people together, through sport.

Steve Curran, Chair of the Local Organising Committee said: “As the Head teacher at Tong High School, I have seen first hand the important role sports can play in school life, enhancing school values and raising standards of pupils’ achievements.”

Nigel Harrison, CEO of WYSport said: “Competition is vital to school sport and these games give our young athletes a chance to enjoy the excitement of a major sporting event. We thank Jet2holidays for their continued support in helping us provide this fantastic opportunity for young people.”

Steve Heapy, Chief Executive Officer of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays said: “We’re delighted to be sponsoring the county finals again this year and we want to wish everyone taking part the very best of luck. These games are a great way to encourage youngsters to get together through sport, developing essential skills such as team work and communication as well as improving fitness levels.

“I’d also like to thank one of our key destination partners, the Greek Tourist Board, who are helping us support this event, and to celebrate, there’s a chance to win a holiday to the Greek Island of Rhodes too!”
