Barcelona is renowned for its stunning architecture, chic café culture and buzzing nightlife making it one of the world’s most visited cities. But with so much going on, visitors often don’t put aside enough time to visit one of Barcelona’s eight white-sandy beaches.
As far as city beaches go, Barcelona is up there with the likes of Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro and California’s Santa Monica. Its Mediterranean coastline stretches for 4.5km and offers tourists a wide variety of excellent beaches.
Top up your tan at Barceloneta
Barceloneta beach has been popular with locals since it was given a multi-million pound makeover for the 1992 Olympics. This beach is probably closest to the city and easily accessible by public transport. If you’re feeling energetic then a brisk walk from the city centre should take no more than twenty minutes.
If you venture further west along the coastline you’ll come to a much quieter beach called Nova Icaria. This is situated next to the Olympic port and ideal for families with small children. For the more adventurous holidaymaker Mar Bella beach is a must for those who enjoy water sports.
Bathing Season Calendar
The beach season usually runs from March-November but most beaches don’t really start to get busy before the end of May. With many cheap flights to Barcelona available all year round, next time you’re in the city why not consider a relaxing day at the beach.
