A family recently took inspiration from a hit Hollywood film when deciding where to take their annual holiday.
After watching Mamma Mia! for the very first time, Natalie Ashbee decided she and her family would take a holiday on the island where the blockbuster was filmed, to experience the beauty first hand. Natalie and her husband Mark live in Cornwall where she is a garden designer and Mark is a photographer. It could be argued that there’s no better place for a photographer to visit than this picturesque island.
During the build-up to the family holiday on the Greek island of Skiathos, Natalie Ashbee and her seven- year-old son Henry, spent their time singing ABBA songs from the film around the house.
Reliving the Film
The hit movie was actually filmed on two islands, Skiathos and neighbouring Skopelos, although in the film, a fictional name of ‘Kalokairi’ is used. The couple and their children Henry and one-year-old twins Poppy and Tabitha, spent an idyllic fortnight on the island of Skiathos in August 2010 and would thoroughly recommend holidays to the Greek Islands. According to Natalie, the scent of lemons and pine needles now invokes memories of the holiday. The family reportedly had great fun recognising parts of the island where scenes for the film had been shot.
The movie, starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth was released in 2008 and became a huge hit, especially with fans of prolific seventies pop group ABBA.
