The Canary Islands are famous for many things – one thing in particular being their clear, unpolluted skies, which is why so many book cheap flights to Tenerife every year. Most recently, those clear skies have caused a storm on social media when what appeared to be a meteor shot through the sky, with people holidaying in the Canary Islands posting messages of their experience.
The Perseids is an annual meteor shower which begins around mid-July and can be seen until about the end of August. This year, it reached its peak on 12th August, giving holidaymakers an impressive show and something new to tweet about. Even though this was the best time to get a glimpse, the days either side of the peak are said to be just as impressive, so booking cheap flights to Tenerife during the Perseids is a win all around.
The Best Place and Time to See It
During the shower, the rate of meteors in the sky can be over 60 per hour, with the greatest rates being in the hours before dawn. It has been said that the best place to enjoy the view is El Teide national park in Tenerife, so a holiday to Tenerife can be more than what you paid for.
Some who weren’t expecting the Perseids reported that they thought the intense white light moving through the sky would fall to earth and cause an explosion, but of course that never happened. Those who did know and booked cheap flights to Tenerife with Jet2.com, in the hopes of seeing the Perseids, would not have been disappointed.
