France’s second largest city has plenty to offer the tourist and is a popular destination for couples, honeymooners and sun-worshipers. Ideally located on the French Riviera, the bustling Promenade des Anglais and inviting azure sea is overlooked by picturesque hilltop villages.
It is also the perfect location for one of the world’s toughest sporting events – Ironman France 2011. On the 26th June around 2500 competitors will plunge into the sea beside the Promenade des Anglais to mark the start of the gruelling triathlon. Thousands of visitors turn up to watch this spectacular event every year as the race continues through surrounding hillside villages and along the beautiful coastline.
About the Event
The event gets underway with a testing 3.8km swim, followed by a gruelling 180km cycle race and if that wasn’t enough the race finishes with a 42km marathon. It’s the ultimate test of endurance and the competitors are among the fittest athletes in the world.
The race usually gets underway at 6.30am and the fastest swimmers usually emerge from the Mediterranean around 50 minutes later. The leading cyclists usually past the post from midday, before going on to finish the marathon at around 3pm.
Huge crowds gather in the evening for a spectacular fireworks display as the last competitors cross the finish line. Ironman France is always a great day out for all the family and you could be there by taking advantage of Jet2.com’s cheap flights to Nice.
