The releasing of the ducks festival is one of the oldest and most popular events in Can Picafort, which is a thriving tourist resort situated on Majorca’s north coast. The festival traditionally takes place on the 15th of August and attracts thousands of visitors each year.
At noon, a fishing boat releases around 300 rubber ducks into the sea for locals to catch and bring to shore. The first one back to shore wins a prize.
One of the More Unusual Festivals
It sounds a little bizarre to say the least, but the festival creates a great environment for holidaymakers to have fun and be entertained in the sun.
However, over the years, the event hasn’t been without controversy. Up until 2007 live ducks were used but they were replaced by rubber ducks after years of protest from furious animal rights campaigners.
But this has certainly not taken the fun out of this fiesta, which also has live music and plenty of Spanish food and drink for you to sample at the festival. You’ll find Can Picafort within easy reach of Majorca.
