Rhodes remains a favourite destination for holidaymakers with the number of UK visitors increasing greatly in 2010. According to industry figures the island is said to have had more than 267,000 UK visitors in 2010, compared to 248,000 in 2009.
Sitting just 11 miles south of Turkey, Rhodes is the biggest of the Dodecanese islands and is best known for its beautiful beaches, archaeological sites and medieval towns.
It is commonly known as the sun island because it enjoys over 300 days of sunshine every year with temperatures reaching 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the height of summer. Even many Greeks themselves come to Rhodes for a holiday from the mainland.
Getting the Best Out of the Island
Over the last few years Greek tourism authorities have worked hard to promote the island, making sure hotel standards are top notch as well as restaurant and other tourist amenities being at their very best.
Tom Panagos, PR manager for Rhodes tourism in the UK said: “Rhodes offers a unique combination, which makes British holidaymakers come back for more. It is short haul and easy to get to, with fantastic beaches, glorious weather, high standards of accommodation, amazing food and all this with a price tag that won’t blow the budget”.
