Jet2.com has started its flying season to Rome two weeks early especially for the Scottish rugby supporters, ensuring they could catch every tackle and pass of the much anticipated showdown. To celebrate, the airline’s staff donned Scotland rugby shirts and also got into the Italian spirit, by treating excited fans to panettone and biscotti.
The first flight to Fiumicino Airport left from Glasgow just after 08:00, giving fans on board plenty of time to soak up the atmosphere in one of the world’s most historic cities before the Scotland team’s big kick-off at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday afternoon.
Steve Heapy, Chief Commercial Officer of Jet2.com, commented: “It’s great that we’ve been able to share in the excitement of the fans flying with us today. As the only direct service from Glasgow to Rome we thought it was important to start our 2012 season earlier with additional flights, to make it as easy as possible for people to travel to cheer on their team. It promises to be a real sporting treat and I just hope the fans are in the same celebratory mood when returning from their trip!”
From today there will be three flights each week to Rome, ideal for those wanting an early Spring city break before the busy Easter period. Flights cost from £32.99 per person, including taxes. Weekend packages from sister company, Jet2holidays, are also available from £179 per person.
Steve continued: “We’ve been thrilled with how popular Rome is with Glasgow passengers, hence the decision to put on sale additional flights. It’s a city which offers something for everyone, and with our friendly flight times people will have plenty of time to make the most of their break to this iconic city.”
Francois Bourienne, Commercial Director for Glasgow Airport, said: “We are absolutely thrilled Jet2.com has added Rome to its list of destinations available from Glasgow Airport. Since arriving at Glasgow Airport in March 2011, the low cost airline has grown from strength-to-strength, doubling its route network, and establishing itself as one of our most popular airlines.
“There has been a growing demand for flights to the Italian Capital of Rome and we are delighted Jet2.com has been able offer a direct service to the city. I’m in no doubt the route will be a great success, and prove to be extremely popular not only with its Scottish based customers, but with in-bound visitors too.
“With a total of 16 routes, and growing, the airline provides a fantastic choice of destinations for its customers.”
Scott Taylor, Chief Executive of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: “Jet2.com’s new service between Glasgow and Rome is a welcome boost for the city and presents us with a significant opportunity to increase short break tourism from Italy.
“Italy represents the seventh-largest international market for Glasgow with over 27,000 trips made each year by Italian visitors who generate more than £9 million for the local economy.
“From our plethora of great Italian restaurants to the opening next month of ‘The Essence of Beauty’ exhibition at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum; showcasing a wonderful collection of over 40 Italian artworks including masterpieces by Signorelli, Bellini, Titian, Domenichino, Rosa and Guardi, Glasgow is a city which truly embraces Italian culture – you could say we’re a regular home from Rome!”
