The new Stargazing LIVE season on BBC2 is celebrating the UK’s community of amateur astronomers.
Broadcast at 8pm on 7th – 9th January and presented by Brian Cox and Dara O Briain, the live event is focusing on capturing the awesome phenomenon of the Northern Lights. However, there’s plenty more fascinating footage of weather storms across the solar system, as well as interstellar travel.
The series’ resident astronomer Mark Thompson will also be joining amateur stargazing events and discovering the best places to view the stars in the UK.
It’s sure to be a spark of inspiration for amateur stargazers across the country, who may wish to pursue their passion further afield. For instance, both Majorca and Tenerife are world-renowned for the quality and clarity of their starry nights.
Majorca is home to an international observatory, set in the tiny village of Costitx in the very centre of the island. The rural heartlands of Majorca create the ideal setting for stargazing, while the observatory is powerful enough to view planets as far away in the solar system as Saturn.
Meanwhile, the Starlight Foundation recently named Tenerife’s Tiede National Park as a ‘Starlight Tourist Destination’ and ‘Starlight Reserve’. The park achieved such accolades due to its impressive Tiede observatory, and the stunning clarity of its pollution-free skies close to the Tropic of Cancer.
