There’s always something going on in the Algarve. The region has a great programme of events throughout the year. April marks the beginning of Loule’s weekly spring markets, as well as Faro’s April commemorations.
April is always a special month on the Algarve when Faro commemorates the peaceful Carnation Revolution, which liberated Portugal from a 40-year dictatorship on 25 April, 1974.
People holding red carnations during the revolution convinced the soldiers of the ruling regime to give up their alliance. The celebrations last for a month and end on the 25th April with locals singing Grandola Vila Morena, a popular revolution song.
Alte Mountain Bike Marathon
Alte’s annual mountain bike race is a great day out for the whole family as spectators line the streets to cheer on the cyclists taking part. There are four races on the day: the family race; the classic race; half marathon and a full marathon. The Bike Marathon takes place on 29th April.
The very best of the Mediterranean arrives in Loulé in June for a music, dance and arts show. Previous shows have welcomed top bands and musicians from Spain, Italy, Greece and Portugal. The event also includes art exhibitions, street theatre and dance performances, while restaurants serve up traditional cuisine from each of the countries taking part.
