Famous contemporary musicians from the Leeds and Yorkshire areas include the Kaiser Chiefs, the Pigeon Detectives and the Arctic Monkeys (Sheffield). Leeds has a number of great venues for live music no matter what kind of music you like. Leeds Metropolitan University and the University of Leeds host a large amount of concerts throughout the year. These have included Led Zeppelin and the Who in the past with more recent gigs including Badly Drawn Boy. The Cockpit is a popular venue which has seen gigs from the likes of Coldplay. Big names such as Queen and U2 have played at Elland Road football stadium in the past and Roundhay Park is also a popular venue which has hosted names such as Robbie Williams and Madonna.
This year is also the 10th year of the Leeds festival - a huge music festival running over three days 22-24th August. It runs together with an event in Reading and together the two venues have won the NME award for Best Live Event for three times in a row. The festival in Leeds will see around 60,000 visitors and has helped launch the careers of names such as Underworld, Arctic Monkeys, Editors, Foo Fighters and Coldplay. This year sees headliner bands Rage Against the Machine, The Killers and Metallica as well as many more great bands.
