It’s known as the island of ‘Eternal Spring’ because of its beautiful scenery, Madeira is Europe’s very own Garden of Eden. The whole island seems to be smothered in vivid bougainvillea, jasmine and other exotic blooms. There’s no better time to visit this sub-tropical paradise than the months of April and May when the flowers wake up and say hello to spring.
Madeira has been wowing holidaymakers for years, many of which travel to the island over and over again. And contrary to popular belief, it's not just for ladies of a certain age who love flowers. There are things to do for everyone, including exciting water sports like diving, sailing, scuba diving and windsurfing.
Madeira’s Flower Festival
Each year, a couple of weeks after Easter, Madeira’s flower festival fills the streets of Funchal with floats displaying a myriad of flowers and colours. The world famous event attracts thousands of holidaymakers to the island every year.
During the festival, hundreds of children gather in the Praca do Município where they build a ‘Wall of Hope’, made of thousands of flowers. The festival also includes concerts, street performances, flower shows and local food and drink stalls.
