The beautiful Greek island of Crete offers a wide variety of festivals and things to do over the summer months. Perhaps the biggest on the Cretan calendar is the Paleochora Music Festival, which takes place during the first ten days of August.
The festival is a mixture of live music, X-Factor style song contests, art exhibitions and there’s plenty of Greek food and drink to enjoy. The song contests can be both amusing and entertaining as locals take to the stage hoping to win over the crowds. Holidaymakers are more than welcome to join in, if you’re feeling particularly brave!
More to the Area Than Just the Festival
Paleochora sits on a small peninsula to the South West of the island and is known for its great beaches and narrow Venetian streets. The popular resort can get particularly busy on festival days but it is easy to escape the crowds in one of the many tavernas, bars and cafes.
Paleochora has several long sandy beaches and it is a great place to go snorkeling or diving. Dolphins are regularly spotted off the peninsula and if you’re lucky you might spot a sperm whale – the largest toothed animal in the world.
