Visiting Chamonix in the New Year

24th December 2010

With such a long ski season in most of the main resorts, it can sometimes be a little difficult deciding when to go for a ski break. Cheap flights to Chambery and Geneva from Jet2.com run regularly throughout the ski season which is ideal for holidaymakers considering a ski break in Chamonix. Yet according to one ski enthusiast, Chamonix is best enjoyed just after the New Year.

Skiing at Val D'Isere

Adam Ruck, writing for the Telegraph’s travel section, claims that this is the best time to appreciate the charms of Chamonix because “the slopes are empty” and you won’t get any “high season hassles”.

"Worth the journey at any time of year"

The skiing available in Chamonix is varied with slopes designed to cater for all levels of ability. In fact Mr. Ruck comments:

“The weather and your competence will dictate which of the five areas to choose and which lift pass to buy: Brévent/Flégère for sunny pistes and scenery; Les Houches for woodland pistes in a white-out; Argentière for a serious workout.”

The modest nature of the resort has made it increasingly popular with ski enthusiasts and whilst Mr. Ruck is quick to point out that post New Year is the best time to visit, he also claims that “Chamonix Mont Blanc is worth the journey at any time of year”.

Cheap flights to Geneva or Chambery for Chamonix cost from £14.99 one way and including taxes.
