Sight Seeing in Glasgow
The city of Glasgow is known for its Victorian Architecture and abundance of shops, bars and eateries so there’s plenty to see and do and this lively Scottish destination. The best way to start your visit in Glasgow is on board a sightseeing bus – you can find these starting in George Square and they are the perfect way to explore the whole city, without getting tired feet!
Don’t overlook Glasgow for arts or culture either – this city has more than it’s fair share of artistic flair which is not surprising seeing as Art Noveau designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh was born here. Admire his work at the Glasgow style Gallery at Kelvingrove which also houses the early Glasgow Tearoom furniture designs by Mackintosh.
Other museums well worth a visit are The Tramway and The Gallery of Modern Art which displays work by many Turner Prize winners like Grayson Perry and Douglas Gordon. However Glasgow’s cultural side isn’t just found in it’s museums, check out the grand architecture in many of the cities historic buildings.
Romantic Breaks in Glasgow
Glasgow might not be the first city to spring to mind when you think of a romantic break but overlook it and you will miss out on its inspiring architecture, wealth of art galleries and attractive parks. Glasgow born architect and designer Mackintosh lends his style to all corners of the city in particular the House for an Art Lover, built using his original blueprints. Also head up to The Lighthouse, (which used to be Mackintosh’s Glasgow Herald newspaper office) for amazing panoramic views across the city.
Spoil yourself with a spot of shopping then relax for a bite to eat in one of the cafes around the sophisticated surroundings of the Italian Centre, then get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy a romantic stroll through one of the picturesque park areas.
Fun Seekers in Glasgow
Shopaholics will be in their element here in Glasgow as the city is known for its fantastic shopping from the designer wear displayed in the windows of Ingram Street to the fabulous Italian Centre for all things stylish, Argyll Arcade which houses over 30 jewellery shops, not to mention the boutique stores found in the trendy West End. After a bit of retail therapy, wind down in one of the bars of Cresswell Lane then pick yourself up with a delicious meal of one of Glasgow’s wide variety of restaurants, this multicultural city has cuisine to cater to every palate.
Glasgow’s nightlife is lively but there is also plenty of areas where you can find a chilled out venue for a more relaxed evening out. Sauchiehall Street, popular with the cities student population, is great for pubs and clubs with the lively West End having every type of bar, pub, club you could want including great restaurants and casinos.
Family Fun in Glasgow
Glasgow is full of fun activities for the whole family so first get your bearings on an exciting bus trip around the city, most start at George Square and is a great way to see all Glasgow has to offer, without moans of tired feet!
Glasgow Science Centre offers a fascinating day out with 3 floors packed full of interactive and virtual exhibits plus live science shows. While you’re there make sure to head up the Tower which revolves 360° and had a viewing platform looking out across the city then catch a 3D film at the huge screen in the IMAX.
If you prefer to stay outdoors, Glasgow boast plenty of greenery with lots of park areas where the kids can run around and play to their hearts content.
The city is also well known for great shops, historic architecture and in particular, the arts and culture on offer at the likes of The Gallery of Modern Art, The Tramway and The Lighthouse. Better still, most of the art galleries and museums have free admission so are definitely worth a visit.
