Lübeck is one of the most beautiful, historic and romantic cities of the North of Germany. It is steeped in history, charm and mediaeval buildings and is an ideal spot for a short break or a day trip from Hamburg.
Lübeck was founded as one of the first cities on the Baltic Sea and was one of the richest cities in Europe during the 13-15th centuries: 'Queen of the Hanseatic League', a trading alliance between Northern cities during the Middle Ages was based out of it's harbour. It remains a small town with the nickname 'City of 7 Spires' and is easy to get around on foot or by public transport. The beautiful old town has been designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site with around 1800 listed buildings and a fairytale feel. It also contains one of the most famous landmarks in Germany - the towers of the Holstentor Gate which act as the entrance to the town. These cylindrical towers built in 1477 have been featured on numerous pictures, paintings and postcards. They are also the emblem of one of Lübeck's most famous exports - the delicious Niederegger Marzipan - don't leave without tasting or buying some!
The city is situated around 2 lakes and numerous canals and is known as the Venice of the North due to the fact that it has more bridges than Venice and Amsterdam put together - the perfect spot for a romantic break! The Inner and Outer Alster Lakes are artificial but make a beautiful area for walking and cycling on the many paths and trails around, as well as sailing and canoeing. In winter the lakes are covered with ice skaters (ice permitting) and in summer there are numerous white yacht sails bobbing up and down.
The Port area, still one of the busiest in the world, is not far away. Around 14000 ships are loaded and unloaded here each year. A harbour tour by boat can give a great impression of just how busy and important the port is to Hamburg.
For culture vultures, you can't do better than Hamburg. The city has around 70 museums, 3 orchestras, prestigious opera and ballet companies, 40 theatres and a constant supply of musicals. It also has many venues for live music and attracts the biggest international names in rock, pop and jazz concerts. A popular museum worth a visit is the Speicherstadt Museum which has interactive displays set in an early 20th Century warehouse. The exhibits display old household, commercial and industrial items as well as old maps and photographs taking you back on a historical journey to Hamburg’s old port town past.
Romantic Breaks in Hamburg
The city of Hamburg is full of picturesque cultural landmarks and beautiful scenery. The best and most romantic way to take in the sights is onboard one of the harbor or canal cruises that float through the historic districts. A tour of the Alster allows you to view some of the cities desirable mansions. It’s worth taking the tour at night to see Hamburg lit up spectacularly. During the summer months you can sail along the Alster Lakes in an old fashioned steam boat and when it turns to winter the lakes are used as an ice rink.
There is nothing more romantic than to take a stroll round one of Hamburg’s quaint Christmas Markets with the delicious scent of roasted almonds in the air. There are many dotted around to visit and at each market you can find stalls selling anything from traditional German delicacies like gingerbread to hand-crafted Christmas decorations for you to take home as souvenirs. Like mini Christmas wonderlands, the markets are decorated with hundreds of candles and trees are adorned with lights and baubles with the song of choir singers adding to the festive ambience.
Treat yourself to a luxurious romantic meal at Michelin-starred restaurant Landhaus Scherrer situated 10 mins outside of Hamburg.
