Sight Seeing in Lanzarote
With Lanzarote’s volcanic landscape there are many exciting and awe-inspiring natural sights to see. Taking a tour of Timanfaya National Park is highly recommended as you can take a coach or camel ride around the volcanic scenery which includes live geysers and boiling pools. You can even stop for a break at the park’s El Diablo restaurant which serves traditional Canarian food cooked using only geothermal heat generated underground.
The Cueva de los Verdes are caves formed 3000 years ago during the eruption of the Corono Volcano, they are well worth a visit to admire the beautiful natural rock formations and you can even take in some traditional folk music as part of the cave is used for concerts.
Los Jameos de Agua water caves are formed by volcanic eruptions but have been developed into a popular tourist attraction. As well as being able to admire the beauty of the natural caves, a swimming pool, garden, bar, restaurant and concert hall has also been added to complete the unique experience.
Volcanic activity in Lanzarote is responsible for shaping many of the island’s most spectacular sights and El Golfo is no exception to this. El Golfo is a huge crater which has been filled with seawater and algae making it bright green in colour, this contrasts with the black sand surrounding it and with the strange rock formations around the crater; it really is an amazing sight. The nearby village of the same name is also worth a visit if you’re hungry as it has some great seafood restaurants.
If you are looking for man-made attractions then you will not be disappointed either. Lanzarote has many fortresses around its coast such as Santa Barbara Castle which date around the 16th century and were used as watch towers to look for pirates who plagued the island and in particular the capital of Arrecife.
The Cesar Manrique Foundation was the home of Canarian artist Cesar Manrique. It contains an art gallery with some of his own work and also art by other Spanish artists such as Picasso; but the house itself is also interesting and unusual as part of it is built into 5 underground volcanic bubbles.
Romantic Breaks in Lanzarote
Lanzarote is the perfect destination for spending time lazing in the sun on a golden, sandy beach with your loved one. One of the most romantic places in Lanzarote to stay is Puerto del Carmen the perfect example of a Canarian fishing town and there are plenty of things along the seafront to see and do on your romantic break away.
For a relaxed day of pampering you will find many spas to choose from especially in Playa Blanca or Puerto Colero. From facials to massages and saunas, nothing will better prepare you for a romantic holiday than indulging yourselves in a day of luxury.
There are plenty of places to stay in Lanzarote to create a romantic ambience, an apartment or villa with an ocean view room is perfect for spending romantic evenings in, eating out on the balcony and watching the sunset together. Alternatively you can head out to one of the many restaurants located on the waterfront, Casa Roja overlooks the sea and is an excellent place for romantic couples, Ikarus in the town of Teguise is also a restaurant with intimate dining and homemade deserts to die for.
Fun Seekers in Lanzarote
Much of the most exhilarating fun to be had in Lanzarote is focused along the beaches and waterfronts. In Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen there is a vast amount of water sports to try your hand at including diving, snorkelling, windsurfing, fishing, jet ski hire and parasailing.
Head to Puerto Calero for sailing where you can catch a ride or hire a yacht yourself and the areas of Famara and La Santa are so fantastic for surfing that they are known as the Hawaii of Europe.
The stunning volcanic landscape is also great for a number of dryer but no less enjoyable activities including, trekking, climbing, caving, cycling and golf.
The main areas for shopping in Lanzarote are the Biosfera Shopping Centre in Puerto del Carmen, Calle Real in the capital of Arrecife and the Deiland Centre in Playa Honda. All of these have shops of every variety including well-known high street stores like Zara and Mango along with smaller boutiques and specialist shops to suit every taste.
The Sunday Market in Teguise is also worth a visit to pick up hand-made clothes, jewellery, paintings, wood carvings and wine as well traditional cuisine.
The nightlife in Lanzarote offers something for everyone whether you’re up for a quiet pint at a bar or a full on party. The best areas to find clubs and bars are around Puerto del Carmen, with plenty of bars and live music, Playa Blanca whose liveliest areas include Centro Comercial Papagayo, Centro Comercial Punto Limones and Costa Teguise which also has a few Irish bars and some delicious restaurants around the Pueblo Marinero.
If you prefer a quieter night out then head to the capital of Arrecife which is much less tourist orientated and where you will find many traditional Spanish bars and restaurants.
Family Fun in Lanzarote
Of course Lanzarote is a great place for a family beach holiday with its long sandy shores and warm waters but if you start to get tired of your bucket and spade then there are many other activities to keep you entertained throughout your stay.
In Puerto Calero you can go on a Submarine Safari which is fantastic for the whole family as you join the huge variety of marine life under the water in their natural habitat. A tour guide will talk you through the dive as you get up close and personal with the fish from behind your very own viewing portal. Anyone over the age of 2 years can go and it is a truly unique experience and makes for a very memorable family holiday.
If you want to see the sea life without joining them, then head to one of the many places along the coast that offer excursions on a glass bottomed boat. You can see fish, reefs and even dolphins as you take a leisurely trip which is bound to thrill adults and children alike.
Rancho Texas Park is just outside Puerto del Carmen and is a nature park which includes an Indian village where the kids can play in tepees and play cowboys and Indians. There are many shows including a Parrot show, Sea lion show and Birds of Prey demonstration and when those batteries need refueling you can head to one of the many themed restaurants around the park.
For another great day out visit Guinate Tropical Park with 45,000 square feet of gardens, lakes and waterfalls and 1,300 exotic and vibrant birds and animals it is an exciting place to spend a day. They hold regular parrot shows, and have many facilities including a restaurant and even a bazaar where you can get a souvenir of your visit.

Lanzarote enjoys "Duty Free Tax" status so make sure you take advantage and shop till you drop.
Be careful when visiting the Sunday Market in Teguise as it gets very busy and is a haven for pickpockets.
Remember that for a night out you want to head to the "Discoteca" not the "Night Club" as "Night Club" in Lanzarote actually means "Brothel"!
