Sight Seeing in Newquay

Although there are no castles or fortresses in Newquay reminiscent of other Cornish seaside towns, Newquay still has plenty to offer tourists looking for a sightseeing break.

The Eden Project is world famous and a must see attraction when visiting Newquay. Located in a giant fifty metre deep crater, the distinctive golf ball shaped green houses cover an area the size of thirty football pitches. Housing plants from three of the world's climate zones including some rare and exotic species, the project demonstrates man's dependence on plants and their conservation efforts.

The National Maritime Museum houses a number of exhibits celebrating the sea, boats and Cornwall. Exhibits include shipwrecks, submarines and boat restorations as well as an underwater viewing zone and hands on activities to give a real insight into the maritime history of the area.

Trerice is an Elizabethan manor house built by the famed Arundell family. A real architectural gem set in beautiful landscaped gardens, this National Trust house is well worth a visit to admire the lavish interior and history of its former occupants.

Huer's Hut is a 14 century, grade II listed building set high on the Towan headland. From here the Huers would watch for shoals of fish and direct the fishing boats towards them to make the catch. There are also spectacular views across the coast from this high vantage point.

The picturesque Newquay Harbour is worth visiting to watch the fisherman sail in with their catches or out to sea and is also a great place for views across the coast. The harbour is where you will also find regular visiting seals who follow the fishing boats in hope of a treat, the National Seal Sanctuary is also nearby.

If you're feeling a bit daring, the suspension bridge at Newquay beach connects the mainland with Towan Island. Hanging across the sea between the two pieces of land, it is not for the faint hearted to step across but you will be rewarded with beautiful views across the ocean.

If you feel like heading further a field, then catch one of the many day trips by plane, ferry or helicopter out to the Scilly Islands where you can spend many hours exploring.

Romantic Breaks in Newquay

If all this isn't enough then you can always head to the beach. Towan, Great Western and Tolcarne Beaches are most popular with families where you can spend endless days building sandcastles and paddling in the Atlantic.
