Sight Seeing in Majorca

Discover different aspects of Palma from the magnificent architecture of the Cathedral to the picturesque fishing villages and contemporary Art Galleries. The stunning La Seu is a 14th century Gothic cathedral positioned proudly guarding the bay of Palma. More recently in 1901, renowned Spanish Architect, Antoni Gaudí, was invited to take over part of the cathedral’s restoration and many of Gaudí’s contributions can still be seen today.

The Palau de l’Almudaina (Almudaina Palace) is a 14th century palace that acted as a former residence for Spanish Royals and the 14th century fortress Castell de Bellver (Castle of Bellver), which was also used as a prison and still features carvings on the walls made by French prisoners. The castle also features a museum and is occasionally used as a concert venue.

If you prefer Art to Architecture then Palma is also home to many art galleries such as the Spanish Contemporary Art Museum which is home to works by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí.

The Caves du Drach are situated close to the marina town of Porto Cristo. These beautiful, natural, limestone caves feature spectacular stalagmites and stalactites and further inside is an auditorium by an underground lake where you are able to enjoy a light show to classical music to highlight the magnificence of the cave formations.

Take a stroll along La Rambla with its many flower-sellers or else along the tree-lined Passeig de Born which leads to the waterfront where fishermen mend their nets and cruise ships drift into the harbour. Further along is the Passeig Maritim where many designer bars are located for a quick drink after a long day of sightseeing.

Romantic Breaks in Majorca

You couldn’t ask for a much more romantic setting than those on offer in Palma. You could have a picnic at one of the secluded coves or take a romantic stroll along one of the many sandy beaches to watch the sunset together. The many cafes and restaurants situated along the seafront, or Passeig Maritim provide a beautiful venue to eat a romantic meal whilst watching the sea lap at the shore. Why not follow a candlelit meal with a horse-drawn carriage ride setting off from La Seu, a 14th century Gothic cathedral, around the wonderful sights and most popular spots of the city.

If relaxation is what you are after then look no further than the Turkish Baths, Banys Arabs, which date from the 10th century and are one of the few remaining Arab-constructed buildings in Palma and features a dome with twenty-five round shafts to allow sunlight in supported by a dozen columns.

Fun Seekers in Majorca

If you’re an adrenaline junkie and don’t mind getting wet then you need look no further than the many beaches along Majorca’s coastline. There are facilities provided for sailing, windsurfing, diving, waterskiing and much more.

The Paseo Maritimo is home to two of the main yachting facilities in Majorca, Real Club Nautico and Club de Mar, or if you’re not a sailor then why not relax and take a trip on a glass-bottomed boat to check out the marine life.

In Magaluf, a 15 minute drive from the centre of Palma, you will find opportunities to go race karting if you’re looking for thrills without the water. Or else spend a day at one of the many golf courses to be found on the island such as Son Termens, the newest golf course in Majorca, which can be found in the town of Bunyola, just nine miles away from Palma. There is also the Canyamel, an 18 hole course just 28km from Palma centre.

Hike over the Tramuntana Mountains, go rock climbing, mountain biking, canoeing, sea kayaking or take advantage of the many other exhilarating activities that Majorca has to offer.

Magaluf and Palma Nova are two of the best known spots of Majorca to party. The Punta Ballena in Magaluf has the highest concentration of pubs and clubs in the town and there is something there for every taste, whether you want exotic cocktails, traditional Sangria, beer, dance music, R&B or rock.

If you want to stay in the centre of Palma, head to Passeig Maritim where there is lively nightlife to be found along the seafront with many bars and clubs to choose from including Pachá and Titos.

During the day make for Jaume III, one of the main shopping broadways, which has many well-known Spanish brands such as Zara and Mango as well as other interesting boutiques to investigate.

Family Fun in Majorca

Palma is a great family destination with something to enjoy for Mum, Dad and children of all ages. With an array of sandy beaches to choose from it would be easy to spend your entire holiday sunbathing; breaking only to take advantage of the wealth of seafront restaurants and cafes, however it would be worth your while leaving the bucket and spade behind to take advantage of some of the other activities available.

Also on the seafront is a vast choice of watersports to try your hand at for the amateur and for the more experienced. Only fifteen minutes from the centre of Palma and you have a choice of resorts to visit with waterparks that have plenty to keep a family entertained as you whiz down slides, whirpools, funnels and land with a splash.

Take a 28km day-long excursion on the old train from Palma to Sóller through the mountains of Serra de Tramuntana and see the spectacular views that Majorca has to offer of cliffs, peaks, olive valleys, orange groves and ancient villages.

Top Tips for Majorca

Visit the Plaza Mayor or any of the other squares in the centre of Palma where weekly markets are held on Wednesdays. You can pick up anything from souvenirs to fresh vegetables to antiques and don’t forget if you visit during the Christmas season you must visit the annual Christmas market and give your festive season a Spanish touch.

If you want traditional Majorcan cuisine, take a 15 minute drive from the centre of Palma to the village of Génova which has many restaurants to choose from such as the Son Pedro which is highly recommended and great value for money.
