Sight Seeing in Tenerife

Much of the sights in Tenerife revolve around the island's beautiful and dramatic scenery caused mainly by volcanic activity. One of the must do activity's is to take a drive into Mount Teide and the National Park where the mountain has the highest peak in Spain. You can take a driving tour around the base of the mountains where you will see astounding volcanic rock formations, colourful lava fields and large craters. You can also take a cable car ride up into the mountain and see some of the imposing yet extinct volcanoes that once caused havoc in Tenerife.

Another truly awe-inspiring sight is Los Gigantes, or The Giants, which are huge sheer black cliffs on the west coast of Tenerife. The scale of these cliffs can only really be appreciated by taking a boat trip from Puerto Santiago to the foot of the cliffs. Historically the people of Tenerife thought these cliffs were sacred and also that this is where the world ended, and it's easy to understand why!

Tenerife is also home to some beautiful churches and cathedrals such as the Basílica Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria and many museums such as the Natural and Human History Museum, which is located in the town of Santa Cruz and housed in a magnificent 16th century building.

The famous black pyramids, Pirámides de Guímar, are well worth a visit, you can take a tour around these huge stone step pyramids and learn about the different theories surrounding their construction. There are also several interesting exhibitions where you can learn about hispanic history.

Romantic Breaks in Tenerife

The landscape of Tenerife provides the perfect backdrop to a romantic break with your loved one. With many types of accommodation to choose from you can stay in luxurious and charming surroundings with views of the island's mountains or ocean.

For a day of pampering together you can visit one of the many spas in Tenerife including Aequor Spa which boasts a Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and mud bath as well as the many treatments and massages on offer to leave you feeling simply gorgeous.

In the evening you can stroll hand in hand along one of Tenerife's famous black sandy beaches and stop off in a bar or restaurant for a romantic meal. For a quiet and more intimate break away from the hustle a bustle of the main clubbing resorts you could stay in Los Cristianos which among others is the location of the aptly named restaurant Restaurante Romantico where you can enjoy beautiful cuisine with after dinner liquors and a rose for the ladies.

Fun Seekers in Tenerife

There is so much to do for the fun seeker in Tenerife that it's difficult to fit it all in on one holiday. One of the best time's of year to visit is in February which is Carnival month, everyday is filled with people in fancy dress, salsa dancing, street bands and processions and is arguably one of the best carnival scenes after Rio de Janeiro.

If you're not visiting in February don't panic there is still plenty to do! There are a huge amount of water sports to try your hand at in the various coastal resorts. El Medano beach in the east of the island is one of the best for surfing and windsurfing but if surfing isn't your thing then all around Tenerife there are facilities for diving, parasailing, sailing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, kayaking, hiring jet skis and of course the traditional banana boat, so you'll never be short of choice.

Catch the boat from Playa de Las Americas and you can go whale watching, which is sure to thrill everyone as you sail alongside graceful whales and playful dolphins.

There are plenty of great golf courses in Tenerife suitable for all abilities including Golf Las Americas, Gold del Sur and Amarilla Golf. You can also spend a day wine tasting at Casa del Vino in El Sauzal.

If you haven't spent all of your money hiring jet skis and golf clubs then head to the capital of Tenerife, Santa Cruz. It is here that you will find the best shopping districts including Plaza del Espana and Plaza de la Canelaia where you will find large shopping centers and fashion boutiques.

Casino Traoro in Puerto de la Cruz is a grand casino built in 1892 and also housing a fine restaurant. If you're feeling lucky it's a great place practice your bluffing; just don't forget to save some beer money for later, you'll need it!

Santa Cruz and in particular the resort of Playa de las Americas is where everything happens after dark. You will find every kind of pub, bar and club including many names you will probably know from home such as Yates and Wetherspoons as well as Irish bars, sports bars and cocktail bars. Playa de las Americas is a mecca for partying with an array of clubs with some of the most popular being Bobby's, Metropolis and Tramps.

As well as great nightlife there is also great food in Playa de las Americas with every style of cuisine on offer including tapas, traditional English, Italian, Canarian, Spanish and Mexican; the list is endless and you may never want to go home!

Family Fun in Tenerife

The family fun to be had in Tenerife is very much focused around the coastal resorts. In Los Cristianos you will find the Aquapark Octopus where it won't be long until you have the kids begging you to let them spend their whole holiday there. There is a dolphin show, a dolphin lake, children's area, water rides, slides, pools, sun beds, restaurants, shops and snack bars so it's a fantastic place that everyone will enjoy.

Loro Parque is a wild life park and a definite place to visit as it is home to some of the finest exotic animals in the world. Located in Puerto de la Cruz it contains the largest penguin populated iceberg outside of Antarctica, one of the best Dolphinariums in Europe and contains a vast array of different animals, birds and fish including the largest parrot collection in the world.

Another animal park that is well worth visiting is Las Aguilas Park. The vast majority of the park is made to recreate a jungle and you can see animals roaming freely including many different birds of prey. The park has a large number of exotic birds and animals including the critically endangered white lion.

Of course the beaches all along the coast of Tenerife are great for family fun. Mum and Dad can relax on a sun lounger with a book or join the kids as they build sandcastles and frolic in the waves. You can also take advantage of the numerous water sports facilities that are located on most of the major resorts.
