Ancient but vibrant, and utterly memorable

Rome is arguably the most fascinating city in the world. An ancient but vibrant place packed with relics, must see attractions, a wealth of culinary delights and modern fashion - truly a unique experience. There is so much to see in Rome that it’s impossible to list all the attractions here but there are a handful of absolute must-sees for any visitor.

Rome

Go back in time

History comes to life in Rome! Transport yourself back to the Classical age by visiting Rome’s must-see monuments. Head to the Colosseum to experience the life of a gladiator, or follow in Caesar’s footsteps by walking around the Roman Forum and the Pantheon. And don’t forget Rome’s more curious sites, such as the Pyramid of Cestius and Mausoleum of Hadrian.

Rome

Pop to pap the Pope

Get two for the price of one on your city break by visiting the Vatican, the world’s smallest state. Sitting at the heart of Rome, it’s full of unmissable sights such as St Peter’s Basilica and its square, where you may see the Pope hold an audience. Top it off by seeing Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel and its incredible frescos.

Rome

Explore the ruins of Ostia

Less than 30km from Rome and easily accessible by train, the ruins of Ostia Antica are a fantastic, and closer, alternative to Pompeii. Explore this port city that served Rome, which boasts an amphitheatre still used for concerts, as well as extensive ruins of temples, schools and baths. It also offers brilliantly preserved frescos and mosaics.

Rome

Stroll around fountains & villas

Trevi Fountain is Rome’s iconic water feature, where you can see Neptune and his horses by day or, preferably, after dark. Alternatively, take a jaunt down the Spanish steps to Fontana della Barcaccia, the “Fountain of the Ugly Boat”. If you want to escape the busy city for a day, it’s worth checking out the gardens at Villas Borghese and Torlonia.

Rome

Take a breather in a piazza

The countless city squares offer an atmosphere like no other. Relax with an espresso and watch the world go by, or grab a snack and take a pew on an ornate wall while watching Piazza Navona’s many street performers do their thing against a backdrop of beautiful buildings and monuments.

Rome

Let the gelato flow

You may want Italian pizza and pasta more than anything else, but the true local delicacy is gelato. Like ice cream, but using less cream and air, this wonderful dessert can be found everywhere in Rome. We recommend Gelateria Valentino and Gelateria II Dolce Sorriso as our top picks – but you’ll have the opportunity to try a lot more!
