Agios Nikolaos
Overview
Built on the ruins of an ancient city and located on the North East coast of Crete, the cosmopolitan resort of Agios Nikolaos is one of the most highly developed on the Island. As the capital of the prefecture of Lasithi the town is well connected to other popular resorts including Heraklion and Sitia both of which are within an hours drive.
One of the landmarks of Agios Nikolaos is Lake Voulismeni, located at the heart of the city and where ancient Greek mythology claims the goddess Athena used to take her bath. The lake and the surrounding area is particularly picturesque with open-air cafes and restaurants along the bank.
Agios Nikolaos has a few sand and pebble beaches and a busy port where the hub of restaurants, cafes, bars and shops can be found. The city also boasts vast opportunities to try several watersports as well as a vibrant nightlife.

There is a popular weekly market in Agios Nikoloas where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables as well as freshly caught fish and local produce. The busy resort centre is also great for leather, good ceramics and jewellery.
Other things to buy from Agios Nikolaos are Wine, Embroideries, handicrafts, Woven goods, Folk art, and Various cheese (types: kefalotyri, graviera).
