Heraklion

Overview

A beach in Heraklion

Heraklion, also known as Iraklio, is the capital of Crete and the biggest city on the Island. Only a 3 mile journey from Heraklion airport, the city is located on the North coast of the Island with an array of beautiful beaches, intriguing architecture and picturesque streets.

The city boasts a rich Minoan history with several ruins to visit and museums dedicated to this period and the legend of the Minotaur. There are also plenty of shops if history isn’t your thing with everything available from designer labels to small food markets.

Heraklion is one of the most popular and busiest resorts in Crete and attracts a healthy stream of visitors all year round whether it be to discover the city’s ancient Greek archeology, dance all night long at the many bars and clubs or simply relax and enjoy the sun on golden, sandy beaches.

Things to do

Palace of Knossos

Palace of Knossos

Traditionally thought to be the seat of King Minos, the ruins of this palace initially built in the 19th century BC, are one of the most amazing sightseeing experiences in the world. Legend tells that this was the location of the labyrinth built to hold the part man, part bull Minotaur and the site certainly has much evidence of its spectacular and mysterious past.

Archaeological Museum

Home to the most important finds of Minoan civilisation including art, ancient treasures and archaeology, a visit to this fantastic museum is perfect to pair with a visit to the nearby Palace of Knossos.

Dance all night

Heraklion enjoys an intense nightlife with a huge choice of modern bars, clubs and cafes to choose from. You can dance all night long at a nightclub, relax in a café by the Old Harbour and watch the world go by or seek out some traditional Cretan music and dancing for a more traditional Greek evening.
