Rethymno

Overview

Turtle in Rethymno

Rethymno combines the charm of its Old Town with a long sandy beach that is often visited by Turtles who come to lay their eggs between June and August each year. Located on the North coast of Crete, Rethymno is also in a great location to access the resorts of Heraklion and Chania being half way between the two.

The Venetian Harbour and Old Town are the focal points of this resort with several cafes, restaurants and tavernas where you can relax with a coffee or souvlaki and watch the world go by.

The beach is great if you feel like relaxing on the sand and there are many amenities along the waterfront which is also where the liveliest bars are to be found in the evening.

Rethymno also has plenty of Ancient Greek history to offer with many ancient cities to explore too as well as the town’s most famous landmark the Fortezza.

Things to do

Fortezza fortress in Rethymno

Fortezza

Built in the 1600s this imposing fortress sits on Palaoikastro Hill overlooking the town. The Venetian style is in keeping with the rest of the town but its bastions and battlements give a glance into the fortress’s military past. With great views from the Fortress walls and events taking place throughout the year the Fortezza is a great place to visit for everyone.
