Rhodes
Lying between the Greek mainland and Cyprus and only 18km from Turkey is the beautiful island of Rhodes. Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands and has everything to offer holidaymakers whether they are looking for beautiful scenery, history and culture, lively nightlife or simply sunshine filled days on the beach.
Rich in cultural history, Rhodes has its fair share of ancient ruins such as the Acropolis of Rhodes found on Monte Smith Hill and the site of the famous Colossus of Rhodes – one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World which are amongst the top things to see during your stay here. The island enjoys a perfect mix of old and new so visitors can get a feel of the traditional Greek way of living including sampling some of the finest Greek cuisine at a local taverna. Dolmades (stuffed vine leaves), Souvlaki (strips of meat) and Moussaka (layers of meat and aubergine baked in a white sauce) are all popular Greek dishes that are worth a try.
The island enjoys a mix of unspoilt pebble bays and stretches of warm golden sands with plenty of amenities and beachfront cafes to enjoy refreshments throughout the day. The beaches of Rhodes cater to everyone, with shallow waters for children and a wide array of watersports like windsurfing, banana boats and scuba diving for fun-seekers. If you can pull yourself away from the warm blue sea then why not indulge in a spot of retail therapy in the high street stores and boutiques of Rhodes Town stopping off for a nice cool drink at one of the trendy terrace bars.
Take a trip to the nearby town of Paros where you will find the picturesque Valley of the Butterflies – so called because of the thousands of multicoloured butterflies that flutter through the stunning scenic backdrop of the Greek countryside. Also worth a day trip is the pretty resort of Ialissos, situated to the north of the island, where there is a lot of fascinating Greek history to be seen in the many ancient sites such as The Temple of Athena Polias and the Doric Fountain House. The coastline here is particularly good for swimming and surfing.
