The resort

Thick snowfall aplenty, this quaint destination is known more for its famous spa than its typically Austrian style. Breaking the rules, Bad Gastein is ideal for blue and red slopes, and welcomes a tipple or two at the end of a day on-piste. It’s neighboured by other smaller resorts worth heading to, including Bad Hofgastein.

Mid-level magic

With wide piste choices, Bad Gastein is a top choice for skiing – more so than snowboarding. But don’t fret – 45km of designated cross country, off-piste awaits. There are nursery slopes for real newbies and black runs over in Graukogel, but the immaculately sculpted mid-range slopes are the best of the bunch.

Wintery wilderness

The gorge layout offers a photo-finish backdrop to any adventure on the slopes. In-line with the awesome scenery in this densely wooded, snow-swept area, there’s even an off-piste safari to try out! Below the jagged mountains, there’s an urban, cosmopolitan resort centre with comfy huts to accommodate you, boutique shops to browse, and a casino to have a flutter in.

Put your feet up

Rest up as you enjoy the acclaimed Felsentherme spa treatments. They’ve rooted this location to the map. Aside from a trip to the theatre, there are fabulous restaurants and outdoor bars for a hot chocolate off the snow. If you want great food, order freshly caught river fish, or steak. Maybe even wash it down with a personally drafted beer or gin and tonic.
