The resort

Host of the Freestyle Skiing back in the 2006 Winter Olympics, this quaint village has some old medieval charm and excellent sporting facilities. You’ll find slopes for all abilities, but the varied terrain is particularly ideal for intermediate-standard skiers. The pace of these wintery passages is fast – and that includes the nightlife! The bars are top notch and the restaurants deliver a tasty feed.

On course

An upmarket playground for winter sportspeople, you’d be surprised how quiet the runs are. You won’t be elbowing for space on these slopes. The piste is great for cruising through postcard-perfect woodland stretches – so much so, you could go as far as Montgenèvre. Check out the nursery slopes and green runs, but Moncrons poses an adventurous black run if you’re more advanced.

Forested freestyle

Freestylers will be in their element here – the Olympiads were! Granted, you’ll have more terrain park choice if you make your way to other Milky Way resorts, but jumps and rails are pretty bold in Sauze d’Oulx as well. Practise your tricks as you drink in these incredible panoramic mountainous scenes.

Lights out

As the sun fades, get to know why the resort’s got such a good reputation for its eateries. There are cafés and pizzerias, plus lounge bars and pubs, so you’ll get cheap pints and crazy makeshift cocktails beyond the scrumptious Italian dishes. There’s even a cinema if you want some post-dinner entertainment. Don’t forget torchlit skiing!

The highlights

  • Part of the epic Milky Way ski area.
  • Red runs offer the best powder in the resort.
  • There’s a super selection of bars for chilling out during the evening.
