Visiting on cheap flights to Venice without taking a gondola ride, would be like visiting Amsterdam and not hopping onto a bicycle – you’ll still have lots of fun, but you’ll have missed out on a vital local experience. Contrary to what many people think, you can get around Venice perfectly well without stepping into a gondola, but there really is nothing like sitting back and relaxing while a ‘gondoliere’ takes you around the city, especially in the evenings.

However, it’s no secret that gondola rides aren’t cheap. The official rates for gondola rides are €80 for a 40-minute ride, for up to six people, and after 7pm the cost rises to €100. If you want your trip to last longer than 40 minutes, or for your gondolier to sing or play music during the journey, that will cost you more. But here’s the problem – gondoliers, like all salespeople, will frequently try to charge you more than the official rates, so you’ll have to come armed with your best negotiation skills!

Here Today, Gondola Tomorrow

Fret not though, as if there aren’t six people in your party you can share your gondola with other holidaymakers to help bring the costs down. You can also take a gondola ride on one of the smaller canals, away from the Grand Canal and the Piazza San Marco, where you might get a better deal and still enjoy an unforgettable experience.

What’s more, you can always rely on getting cheap flights to Venice with Jet2.com that will leave you plenty of cash left over to take that gondola trip, and bring home a few souvenirs too!
