Dancing in the Street in Tenerife

30th January 2012

If you’re planning to visit Tenerife in February then chances are you’ll run into a carnival or two. February is carnival month and is celebrated in every town and village on the island. The most spectacular carnivals can be found in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Puerto de la Cruz.

Tenerife Nights

For twenty seven days during February many celebrations are held all over the island, including the annual election of the Queen, street band competitions, costume processions and the impressive cavalcade, which brings together Caribbean and European influences.

Santa Cruz Carnival

The Santa Cruz Carnival attracts around a million revellers each year. Not for nothing is the city twinned with Rio de Janeiro: with its glorious sunny weather and fiesta-loving locals, Santa Cruz offers the closest European equivalent to the Brazilian bacchanal.

Puerto de La Cruz Carnival

This is the second most popular carnival on the island. Last year’s carnival attracted more than 30,000 partygoers in Plaza del Charco and surrounding streets. The celebrations last for more than a week. The main events at the Puerto de la Cruz Carnival are the Burial of the Sardine, the outrageous High Heels Drag Marathon and the closing parade.

With daily cheap flights to Tenerife available all year round at, you could soon be joining in February’s carnival celebrations.
