COVID-19 testing for travel

Wherever you choose to travel to these days, at least some negative COVID-19 tests are required for most people. So first up, you need to check our travel requirements page for all the latest requirements both overseas and returning to the UK. Once you know exactly what tests you need going out and coming back, we’re here to help below with everything you need to know about the types of tests and how to get them.

Required Green List destination tests

Pre-travel COVID-19 test

Some overseas governments require everyone to show either proof of a negative COVID-19 test or proof of full vaccination on arrival. If you’re required to, you must take the required test in the days before you go away (usually within either 48 or 72 hours before your arrival time).

Return to UK test

The Return to UK test must be taken while you’re on holiday in the three days before your return flight. You can book this in advance and take a test with you or you can arrange one locally in resort. You’ll need to provide proof of your negative test result via a printed document, email or text before you board your flight to the UK.

Day two and day eight tests

Once you arrive in the UK, you must take a COVID-19 PCR test on or before day two of your arrival. If you’re travelling from an Amber List destination, you also need to take a day eight test if you’re aged 18 and over and haven’t been fully vaccinated*. These tests must be pre-booked before you fly to the UK and you’ll need your booking reference to complete your UK passenger locator form.

*To be “fully vaccinated” you must’ve had your final dose of an approved vaccine under the UK, EU or US vaccination programme at least 14 days before you’re due to arrive in the UK.

How to get a vaccination certificate / NHS COVID Pass

If you’re fully vaccinated with two doses of any approved vaccine, some destinations allow you to enter the country without showing a negative COVID-19 test result. You can check our travel requirements page for more information.

Instead, you’ll be asked to show proof of your vaccination status. An NHS COVID Pass shows your COVID-19 vaccination details or test results – this is your status. You can get this by:

  • Downloading the NHS app: You can use their app on mobile devices and your NHS COVID Pass will be shown within it. If you don’t already have the NHS app, you’ll need to register, which can sometimes take a few days – it’s easier if you have your NHS number to hand.
  • Visiting the NHS website: You can view your NHS COVID Pass and download or print it as a PDF document. You'll need to register for an NHS login if you don't have one already.
  • Calling 119: You can call 119 and ask for an NHS COVID Pass letter to be posted to you. Just so you know, it can take up to five working days to reach you.

Details may vary for Scotland and Wales residents. Please check with your national health service.

If you’re travelling from Northern Ireland and can’t get proof of full vaccination, you may want to consider taking a COVID-19 PCR, LAMP, TMA or NEAR test and providing proof of a negative result instead. Please note, your business card-sized paper COVID-19 vaccination record card isn’t an acceptable form of vaccine status proof and can’t be used to enter.

Finding a testing supplier

When it comes to testing, we know everyone has different preferences. You may be happy to do your tests at home or you might prefer a supervised medical location. The choice is yours, so you can do what’s best for you. To get you started, we’ve created a list of testing suppliers below. As requirements can change, we’d recommend that you don’t start arranging any tests until around seven days before your departure.

The following links will take you to third-party websites. If you choose to buy any of their services, your agreement will be with the testing supplier directly. Just so you know, we’re not responsible for their availability, content, information, timeliness, products or services. Please check the individual terms and conditions and privacy statements.

You’re completely free to shop around and find your own testing supplier(s) – and it’s your responsibility to make sure you’re happy with the buying decisions you make. You must get the correct testing in line with the requirements of governments both in the UK and abroad.
