Set in the very heart of the Mediterranean, Malta is a unique island that packs plenty of variety between its shores. It may be one of the smallest countries in the world, but its cultural offering is anything but miniscule. From the capital, Valletta, with its UNESCO-listed architecture and shimmering shorefront, to the narrow streets of the ages-old silent city of Mdina, Malta has no shortage of history-stuffed towns. When you need a break from sightseeing, Malta’s coastline has an abundance of spectacular seaside resorts, like Mellieha Bay with its sandy beach, and buzzy St Paul’s Bay.

Malta may be small, but it rivals the big-hitters for historical sights. The island certainly has an action-packed tale to tell. In fact, there are three fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Sites on the Maltese Islands, including the Megalithic Temples, the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum and the capital city of Valletta.
The story starts more than five thousand years ago. Yep, you read that right! The Hal Saflieni Hypogeum is an underground temple that dates back to 3600 BC. Spread across three levels, these stone-forged rooms still have an eerie presence. Be sure to book your visit early though, as entry is strictly limited each day.
Visiting the Manoel Theatre brings you history at its most dramatic – it’s said to be Europe’s third oldest working theatre. Despite being built back in 1731, the show must go on, with operas, plays and pantomimes still being performed here. While you’re watching a show, take in the splendour of the baroque design too.
