Like many people who book cheap flights to Corfu, Jane Horrocks was inspired to visit the island after reading Corfu-native Gerald Durrell’s stories – and to her relief, she discovered things hadn’t changed much since Durrell’s day.

Writing for The Independent, ‘Little Voice’ star Horrocks explained how she was captivated by My Family and Other Animals, in which Durrell recounts his boyhood adventures on the Greek island. According to Jane, Durrell later became deeply fearful of the impact cheap flights to Corfu would have on his beloved island, as people flocked to visit the places they’d read about.

However, her first visit in 2004 (nine years after the author’s death) told a different story. While there was no denying the modern developments and many tourists, there were also areas as wild and unchanged as the books described.

Return to the Wild

Jane recently paid a return visit to the island, staying in the same resort as before - Saint Stephanos, an unspoilt village on the north-east coast. Accessible only by a series of narrow hair-pin bends, it opens onto a bay surrounded by lush groves of olive and cypress trees, with just enough bars and tavernas to keep the evenings lively. Jane’s villa was a delight, with a garden that was a colourful riot of orange blossom and pomegranate trees.

Animated with swooping swallows, fluttering butterflies and the constant chirping of cicadas, Mr Durrell may well have given his approval. To see the beauty of Corfu for yourself, snap up a cheap flight to Corfu with Jet2.com for as low as £57 one way including taxes.
