Back of the net! The Jet2.com football team proved themselves worthy winners of the Aviation Cup, which took place in Derby on 28 June 2014.

As the world has been in the grip of full-on football fever, it was a fitting time to kick-off the Aviation Cup. Organised by Eastern Airways, the one-day competition was an open invite to airline employees nationwide to show off their footballing prowess.

The team, made up of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays employees, battled it out in an 18-team tournament, facing fierce rivalry from airlines including BMI, British Airways and Monarch.

Staged at the Derby Soccer Dome in Pride Park, the event even saw a derby in Derby as Jet2.com took on Jet2holidays and won a thrilling 6-1 victory, with flamboyant striker James Corden claiming a hat-trick!

After the match, Jet2holidays’ goalkeeper, Gavin Priestley, said: “I faced an attacking onslaught in goal today. We just couldn’t deal with their pace, technique and raw ability.”

With a talented line-up of employees from sales, marketing, revenue and the flight deck, the Jet2.com team sported the Benidorm FC kit, to reflect the airline’s popular flights and holidays to the Costa Blanca.

The team continued to show off their silky skills and fine finishing, beating Monarch on the way to the final. In the deciding match, they kept a clean sheet and beat Pattonair 1-0 to bring home the Aviation Cup to Jet2.com!

Jet2.com team captain, James Malyon, said: “We showed great tenacity and had an appetite to win. I couldn’t be more proud of the team’s achievement.”

Man-of-the-match, Matthew Dakin, said: “Hard work and determination, in keeping with the spirit of Jet2.com, shone through for us on the day. A committed team effort saw us scoop yet another award for our trophy cabinet.”

Jet2.com offers flights to Alicante from Belfast, Blackpool, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford, Manchester and Newcastle.
