Families wanting an unforgettable Easter experience should book cheap flights to Tenerife, where an awe-inspiring enactment of the Death and Passion of Christ takes place at the historic village of Adeje each Good Friday.
As with mainland Spain, Semana Santa (Holy Week) is a highly spiritual occasion in Tenerife, with processions and other religious events taking place across the entire island.
The highlight of all these is the ‘Passion of Adeje’, one of the island’s most spectacular and memorable events, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. An incredibly realistic and moving account of Jesus Christ’s last hours on earth, the weeks of preparation ensure it is as tightly crafted as any professional production – demonstrated by the fact it is shown live on Spanish television. Located on the popular south-east coast of the island, between Playa de las Americas and Porto Santiago, Adeje is a holiday hot-spot, with the Passion being a major date on the tourism calendar. Culture councillor Nayra Bethencourt has announced preparations are now in full swing, with anyone wanting to take part in the representation asked to enrol at the Cultural Centre. It is not clear whether the large community of expats on the island will be taking part, but the news is that this year’s performance will incorporate “major changes”.
