The answer is as clear as mud.

People generally book cheap flights to the Spanish Costas for the sun-kissed beaches, but a growing number are flying to Murcia San-Javier with one thing in mind - to wallow in the sticky black health-giving mud flats of San Pedro del Pinatar National Park, just a few kilometers away.

A Specially Protected Area, the park has been part of the area’s salt industry since Roman times, and today is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, cyclists and walkers. It is also a magnet for those wanting to give themselves a free spa treatment, courtesy of the deep, black, mineral-rich deposits of the Baños de Lodo mud flats. Located close to La Mota beach and the Molino Quintín windmill, their therapeutic qualities have been known about by the Spanish people for centuries, and even have the approval of modern doctors.

A Cure For All Kinds of Ailments

Each summer thousands of men, women and children arrive to cake themselves in the rich clay, which is said to cure a whole range of ailments, from inflammatory skin conditions to gout. The mud is also a great beautifier, driving toxins from the skin and purifying the body – all free of charge, of course.

During Edwardian times, Mar Menor became a popular spa, attracting wealthy retirees from all over Murcia. Now, everyone can enjoy its benefits - after all, the area has a lot more to attract visitors than just the mud flats, such as stunning flocks of flamingos, thrilling water sports and fantastic hotels and restaurants. Cheap flights to the Spanish Costas – including the Costa Calida – are available from Jet2.com.
