Obergurgl ski resort

Got your sights set on Austria for your next ski trip? High above the Ötztal Valley, Obergurgl’s a prime pick for winter getaways. And the best bit? Its lofty postcode. With the village located at around 1930m and lifts reaching over 3000m, it’s remarkably snow-sure. Most hotels sit directly beside the slopes, meaning lots of ski-in, ski-out options. The modern lift network is fab too, so you can spend more time on the slopes and less time in queues. Beginners benefit from the gentle nursery areas near the village, while intermediates will love the range of red runs, like those from Festkogl and Hohe Mut. There’s plenty for piste pros too and you can explore neighbouring Hochgurgl, via the Top Express gondola. Travelling with tots? Families can take their pick of excellent ski schools.

Obergurgl itself oozes alpine charm, thanks to its 18th-century church and traditional wooden buildings. When it comes to après, the rowdier bars are on the mountain, while elegant hotel lounges beckon down in the village. You could also get stuck into other activities like snowshoeing, winter hiking or ice skating. Many of the hotels have spas you can visit for a fee too – perfect for soaking those sore muscles.

The location

Obergurgl is located at the southern end of Austria’s Ötztal Valley in Tyrol, close to the Italian border. At nearly 2000m above sea level, it’s one of the highest villages in the Alps, giving the resort its exceptional snow reliability. The village sits beneath a crown of glaciers and three-thousand-metre peaks, creating a dramatic backdrop to your winter escape. Despite its high-altitude postcode, Obergurgl’s easily accessible. Innsbruck Airport is around 90 minutes away, so you can maximise your time on the slopes. The resort forms part of a twin-area with Hochgurgl, connected by the panoramic Top Express gondola.

Chills and thrills

Obergurgl’s après-ski scene is a sophisticated affair. You’ll find stylish mountain terraces serving up refined cocktails and rich Austrian wines. For a livelier twist, the Nederhütte hosts its legendary early-evening sessions. If you’re looking for a scenic sunset drink, head up the Hohe Mut earlier in the day to secure a spot.

Alpine eats

Bit of a foodie? Many hotels here offer half board, making evenings effortless after a full ski day. Menus range from hearty Tyrolean staples to sophisticated tasting menus. Mountain restaurants excel too. Don’t miss classic dishes like kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancakes), dumpling soups, Tiroler gröstl or apple strudel.

Snow much fun for everyone

This resort’s a family favourite for good reason – everything is compact, safe and easy to navigate. With many hotels right on the slopes, morning logistics become a breeze: no hurrying for buses, no long walks in ski boots, no stress. The resort’s excellent ski schools offer dedicated children’s areas with magic carpets, gentle slopes and experienced instructors.
