Ischgl ski resort
Ischgl in Austria is just the ticket if you’re after pristine pistes and a vibrant atmosphere. If clocking up the kilometres is your main priority, you’ll be in your element in the 218km Ischgl-Samnaun ski area. And with varied terrain and speedy, modern lifts, you'll have everything you need to make memories on the mountain. First-timer? Practice your turns in the beginner zone by the Idalp station. Once you’ve built up your confidence, the cruisy 8km-long red down to the neighbouring resort of Samnaun in Switzerland is a must. Experts can test their mettle on the black runs on the Greitspitze peak, while the Silvretta area is spot on for snowboarders. In fact, Ischgl held the first ever Snowboarding World Cup here back in 1993. It’s no surprise then that it’s got a world-class snow park too, boasting two park areas, one fun line and a bag jump!
When you need to refuel, you can look forward to mountain huts serving up schnitzel, kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancakes) and cheese dumplings. And when the lifts shut for the day, the resort’s après scene really comes into its own. Whether you’re dancing in ski boots at Trofana Alm or sipping steins at Der Kuhstall, there’s something for everyone.
The location
Nestled within Austria’s Tyrolean Alps, Ischgl sits at 1,377 metres in the scenic Paznaun Valley, near the Swiss border. Its setting is dramatic, surrounded by rugged peaks and evergreen forests. Despite its remote feeling, it’s easily accessible, just over an hour from Innsbruck Airport. A series of high-speed gondolas link the village directly to the Silvretta Arena. A ski lift away lies Samnaun, a duty-free resort in Switzerland. That means you can ski both sides of the Alps in one day! Beyond the pistes, the surrounding region invites adventure, from serene winter hikes to snowshoe trails and panoramic viewpoints.
