Val d'Isere ski resort
Val d’Isère is a bucket-list resort for many skiers and boarders. Here, it’s all about high-altitude adventures, world-class skiing and a sprinkling of French alpine charm. Nestled deep in the Tarentaise Valley and connected to neighbouring Tignes, it forms part of the Val d’Isère-Tignes ski area. That means you’ll have over 300km of perfectly groomed pistes and endless off-piste terrain at your fingertips. Beginners can boost their confidence on the wide, gentle runs near the village, while seasoned skiers test themselves on iconic slopes like La Face de Bellevarde. Intermediates are spoilt for choice too, thanks to the long cruising reds, such as the one down to Le Fornet. Freestyle fan? Make your way across to the adrenaline-packed snow park. Off-piste explorers can hire local guides to navigate legendary descents like the Tour du Charvet or powder fields beneath the Grand Pré chairlift.
Beyond the slopes, Val d’Isère has plenty to offer. The cobbled streets lead to elegant boutiques, buzzing après-ski bars and Michelin-starred restaurants serving everything from rustic Savoyard fare to refined gastronomy. Or why not unwind at the Centre Aquasportif? This complex is home to a pool, climbing wall, squash courts and more.
The location
Val d’Isère sits at an impressive 1,850m in France’s Savoie region, close to the Italian border, guaranteeing reliable snow from late November to early May. The resort is part of the Tignes–Val d’Isère ski area, one of Europe’s highest and most snow-sure domains. Chambery Airport is around two hours away, with private transfers, regular shuttles and high-speed train links via Bourg-Saint-Maurice. The resort itself is easy to navigate, with a free shuttle service running regularly between the main lift stations, accommodation areas and shopping streets. Modern lifts like the Olympique and Solaise gondolas rise directly from the village, reducing queues and maximising your time on the mountain.

The Village des Enfants at the base of Solaise offers safe, fun ski lessons for younger kids, while teens can tackle gentle blues or try their first freestyle moves at the Val Park. Off the slopes, the family fun continues with ice skating, tobogganing or exploring the Aquasportif Centre’s pools and climbing wall.
Alpine magic
There’s lots for non-skiers to get stuck into here. Snowshoe trails wind through forests around Le Fornet, and spa-seekers can recharge at Les Barmes de l’Ours, where saunas, massages and pools await. Boutique browsing and café hopping is all part and parcel. You could even hop on a scenic gondola ride to Solaise or Bellevarde.

Val d’Isère’s food scene is a huge part of its appeal. Tuck into lunch on the terrace at Le Signal or La Fruitière, where mountain classics like tartiflette are on the menu. In town, two-Michelin-starred L’Atelier d’Edmond turns local produce into edible art.
