Axamer ski resort

Known locally as the ’White Roof of Innsbruck’, Axamer Lizum offers reliably deep snow, wide-open bowls and a beautiful backdrop. And all this just an easy bus ride from the city! The gentle slopes around Hoadl provide plenty of room to practice, with lifts that are easy to navigate and terrain that builds confidence quickly. The red runs leading back toward the base area are varied enough to keep you entertained all day without ever feeling repetitive. Ski schools here are friendly, multilingual and experienced too – especially valuable for families.

The resort’s infrastructure is efficient, modern and simple to navigate. The Hoadlbahn funicular-style lift whisks you quickly to the heart of the terrain and from there you can branch out in multiple directions. And when you’re in need of a pit-stop? The panoramic Hoadl Haus offers sun-drenched terraces, steaming bowls of soup and views that stretch across the Stubai Alps. Non-skiers will also find lots to enjoy in the surrounding winter landscape. The area’s home to peaceful winter hiking trails and scenic snowshoe routes that weave through quiet forests. There’s also a toboggan run nearby in Axams for the thrill-seekers! And when you’ve maxed out on mountain time, you can head into Innsbruck to explore its sights and delights.

The location

Axamer Lizum is located in the Austrian state of Tyrol, 19km southwest of Innsbruck. It’s one of the most accessible high-altitude resorts in the region. Set at elevations between 1500m and 2340m, it benefits from a consistently snowy microclimate, which is why it served as a major venue during the largest winter sporting event in 1964 and 1976. The resort sits above the village of Axams, a charming Tyrolean spot filled with traditional architecture. Because of its proximity to Innsbruck, it’s ideal for travellers who want the convenience of a city break combined with the thrill of skiing or boarding. Buses run frequently from the city centre to the resort, giving visitors easy access without the need for a car.

Après activities

Axamer Lizum delivers a relaxed yet lively après-ski scene. The Hoadl Haus turns golden at sunset, inviting skiers and non-skiers alike to unwind with panoramic views and a hot Glühwein. Down at the base, bars and umbrella pubs create a friendly atmosphere – perfect for sharing stories of the day’s adventures.

Fuel the fun

Hearty alpine recipes are the dish of the day around these parts. The Hoadl Haus serves generous Tyrolean classics – dumplings, stews, schnitzel and sweet Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancakes), paired with some of the best panoramic views in the region. Down the mountain, rustic huts dish up warming soups, fresh pastries and après-friendly snacks perfect for recharging between runs.

Calling all snowboarders

This resort’s a top pick for snowboarders, thanks to its natural terrain features and spacious layout. The snow park, set up each winter near the Schönboden area, adds an extra layer of fun, with a selection of kickers, boxes and rails that cater to beginners and freestyle pros. The lift system’s snowboard-friendly too.
